What is Greenwashing?
Guardyan
The definition of Greenwashing is an organization, brand, or campaign that perpetuates false and misleading claims in order to claim environmental awareness. Greenwashing is when a company releases a a “green” product, advertisement, or campaign without taking the necessary actions to fulfill that image.
In the wake of many consumers demanding more ethical and sustainable products, organizations respond by presenting themselves as motivated to participate in green initiatives.
But why do they bother with this charade?
Climate change, ocean acidification, plastic pollution has become an increasingly prevalent issue. Consumers have begun to look for more sustainable alternatives and areas where they can have impact within their own lives. This has led organizations to promote and rebrand their products and services in order to appeal to the conscious consumer traffic.
Many organizations wanting to satisfy their consumers have taken to “greenwashing” their products. Whether a company makes this choice intentionally or unintentionally, it makes their public image look better without actually doing any of the work to protect our environment. Some companies genuinely intend to do better, but do not know where to start which is where Guardyan Conservation comes in.
We’ll support you in taking the necessary steps to hit your sustainability targets, so that you are creating direct environmental impact and not putting out false or misleading information.
How to avoid companies that use greenwashing techniques?
Unfortunately, there are no requirements or qualifications for companies to use the words “eco-friendly”, “all natural”, “green”, or “sustainable” on their products and advertisements. Consider looking at the ingredients or inquire where the product comes from. We recommend doing your own research into organizations or products that you frequent.
If you see a green coloured plastic bag at your grocery store that doesn’t rightly say “recycled”, “compostable” or the like, then you’ve identified a case of greenwashing.
